After two months of drama and departure of Spider-man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel and Sony finally struck a deal and now Spider-man starring Tom Holland is coming back to Marvel!
It felt like when Thanos snapped, he not only erased Spider-man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also Marvel Studios in our Universe. When Marvel and Sony couldn’t come up to an agreement about the character’s future in monetary terms, it was almost certain that we have seen the last of Tom Holland as the most beloved version of Spider-man.
But after the widespread outcry from the fans, the two Studios struck a deal and nerds & geeks all over the world rejoiced – including Tom Holland who may be the biggest nerds of all given his enthusiasm about the iconic superhero. Upon hearing the news that Spider- man is back in MCU, Holland posted a video of Leonardo DiCaprio from the movie ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. “I’m not leaving. I’m not leaving. I’m not f*cking leaving!” shouts Leo’s character, Jordan Belfort.
It’s official, Tom is not leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Disney’s greed for more money almost put the whole franchise in jeopardy. According to the original Sony-Marvel deal, Disney was getting an estimated 5% of the gross income over the past two movies – Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Initially, Disney was content with it’s 5% share in exchange for the Spider-man to show up in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
However, after Spider-man movies’ tremendous success and seeing how much money the movies were making, Disney refused to stick to the past deal. Disney immediately proposed a new deal demanding a 50/50 share which Sony, rightly so, refused. It seemed like Sony was completely okay with making Spider-man movies without both Marvel and producer Kevin Feige.
But the backlash from the fans forced the Studios to sit down again and strike a new deal. Disney will now co-finance 25% of a third Spider-man movie for a 25% equity stake. It also means Spidey will continue to appear in future Disney/Marvel movies.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Kevin Feige said in a statement. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
Holland’s co-star Zendaya too, congratulated him by posting a dancing Spider-man video in a tweet.
