Marvel Star Becomes a Style Icon in New Series – Now on Disney+

Sunglasses, white hair tied in a strict ponytail, gloves, and a black suit: this is how many will remember designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019 at the (probable) age of 85. Probably because, like everything in his life, Karl Lagerfeld kept his birth year a secret. According to official records, he was born on September 10, 1933, but he himself long claimed to have been born in 1938—later revising this to 1935. Consequently, he celebrated his 70th birthday multiple times in different years.

Starting July 7, 2024, Disney+ offers a series on the extraordinary life of this fashion icon. In “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” Marvel star Daniel Brühl (“The Falcon and The Winter Soldier”) takes on the role of Lagerfeld, guiding the audience through his rise in the 1970s, his disputes with Yves Saint Laurent, and providing insight into his relationship with Jacques de Bascher, his one great love.

The Story of “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld”

In the early 1970s, designer Karl Lagerfeld (Daniel Brühl) is already one of the most famous names in the Paris fashion scene, constantly making headlines with his creations. Yet, he hasn’t achieved his ultimate breakthrough. He prefers working in the shadows of big names like the women’s fashion company Chloé, despite being the center of attention at every event with his unique personality and extravagant suits.

To those around him, he is a mystery. In an era dominated by sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, his aristocratic stiffness seems out of place. Yet, Karl longs for someone who understands him. He believes he has found this in the passionate Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin). However, Jacques starts struggling with Karl’s eccentric personality and gets involved with Karl’s friend and rival Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois). Can this love triangle work? Or will it destroy one of them?

If you enjoy complex relationships, you might already be a fan of the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” Season 3, after a slow start, is once again becoming a huge hit for the streaming service.
