Zack Snyder’s DC Colleague Mocks First Look at Henry Cavill’s Superman Successor

-

The first image from the new “Superman” film created quite a stir online. Even a “Justice League” director commented on it – though not positively.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is grappling with its first real crisis, its rival is attempting a reboot. The DC Universe (DCU) aims to leave behind recent financial flops like “The Flash,” “Black Adam,” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” over the next few years. Whether they can achieve this or if the long-predicted superhero fatigue is truly upon us will be interesting to see.

“Superman” is expected to play a crucial role in the DC reboot. James Gunn (“The Suicide Squad”) is responsible for directing and writing the film, initially titled “Superman: Legacy.” Along with Peter Safran, Gunn oversees the entire DCU as a co-head of DC Studios. The success of this endeavor will likely depend on whether the general audience can move past Zack Snyder’s vision of the DCEU and embrace something new.

One of Snyder’s DC colleagues is at least not a fan of the first image of “Superman,” where Henry Cavill’s successor, David Corenswet, is seen in the iconic suit for the first time. Clay Staub, who worked as a Second Unit Director for Snyder on five productions, including “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” shared his thoughts on the image. Staub was responsible for independently filming scenes to ensure more efficient production.

Clay Staub commented on the first “Superman” image via X (formerly Twitter):

“Who thought this was the best option for a First Look?

Seriously, I’m not joking, I’m just talking about the layout, the pose (putting on the boot) makes the chest and arms of the suit look bulky and rubbery.

By the way, are we going back to underwear, asking for a friend?”

James Gunn Seeks Approval for the Underwear Look
Staub isn’t alone in his aesthetic criticism. Some have not only criticized the unheroic pose but also questioned the decision to show the new Superman doing something as mundane as putting on his shoes for his big reveal. For a first look, something more celebratory would have been appropriate.

After Zack Snyder’s significantly darker version, which was criticized by many for its serious approach, it might be a good idea for Gunn to return to the original Superman. Although it may seem a bit old-fashioned, a version of the superhero designed after the human ideal and standing for genuine goodness might be the best choice to win back audience favor, especially in these times.

We will find out if this strategy works starting July 10, 2025, when “Superman” hits German theaters. If you’re now in the mood to rewatch the last standalone Superman film: “Man of Steel” with Henry Cavill is available for purchase on Prime Video.
